I visited Faial, with a day trip to Pico, in late April 2009. I had great luck at the library, researching my mother's father's line, even though the reference librarian spoke no English and I do not speak any Portuguese. Cheri's Portuguese Word List came in very handy! Nearly everything in Horta is within easy walking distance. I stayed at the Hotel Do Canal, which was directly across from the marina, where the ferry departs to Pico and Sao Jorge, and walked to the library from there.
I had a wonderful cab driver named Antonio Pereira, who spoke excellent English (he lived in Canada for many years). When Antonio found out that my trip was to research my family, he made it his mission to help, calling everyone he knew to ask about the Duarte Luis family. He even arranged for me to meet with several people in Horta and Flamengos (where my grandfather was born) that possibly had a connection to that family, but, sadly, we couldn't find any direct relationships. But, I met some wonderful people and I am eager to continue my research on this line of my family. Faial is beautiful and I would love to return again later in the spring/summer to see the blue hydrangeas in bloom. If anyone plans to travel there in the future, I would be happy to recommend and share Antonio's information (he also speaks Italian!)
