Dear Celeste and Group,

???? I found my grandparents marriage date and place in a news article about
their 50th anniversary.?In a ?phone call, I was told they couldn't find the
record even though I gave the exact date.?

I finally went there ( San Francisco, CA) and they didn't have time for me. I
insisted and the office gal finally gave me the book to look at for 1896. There
they were on the right date, but I was shocked to find their parents names
recorded. They were both illegitimate but had to give their fathers names and
their own birth dates. This wasn't a marriage certificate but the application
they had to give info for. This was 1896, years before the Bristol record you
were searching for.

The churches do keep records but are very hesitant to share them.

My contact in Bristol, RI "called St Mary's Church in Bristol and talked to
David Barbosa. He was very pleasent and gave us plenty of time on the phone
trying to help with our search. He checked the marriage record and told us the
baptismal info was not recorded. There was no requirement in those days to have
a certificate or show a baptismal record. That was something that came later."

?

So, if anyone on the list is looking at marriage records for 1909, you will not
find parents names or place of birth on the church marriage record.

Celeste
