The name is definitely Quarenta. Manuel's grandfather already carried that name and in Manuel's fathers baptism even names him as "Quarenta" rather than de "Medeiros Quarenta". Chances are that the name started out as a nickname (alcunha) and was ended up being recorded as a surname. Whenever researching do not assume a name to be absolute, be alert to variations and changes especially from one generation to the previous and/or the next. Although this is not in my line? Also the CCA has posted the obituaries for the parish of Nossa Senhora do Rosario from 1594 to 1883 which I compiled and offered to them.
