Frank,

Did you check the birth/marriage records of Joseph Bartlett? Do any of these give any inkling of where the father was born? You say he was adopted....do you have his adoption papers? He was only with this family from sometime between 1860-1870 and sometime between 1870-1880. Remember, some Portuguese changed their names at a matter of convenience, so is it possible he was not adopted but just borrowed the Bartlett name? I found a travel record for Erastus H. Bartlett on the Steamship Arizona sailing from Aspinwall, Panama arriving, I think it was NY, 8/21/1867. I do not see your Jose on the ship.

On the 1870 census living in Deering is the following:
Erastus H. Bartlett 56, wife Sarah G. 53, Joseph ALVIS (most likely Alves?) 18, b. Portugal, and Dolly Bartlett 63. You may have this info but they have Alvis as his name and you have Gerevas - or have we gone over this before? Joseph is not with them in the 1860 census so he obviously came to the US between 1860 and 1870. If he was born 1852, I wonder if it was later in 1860's?

In 1880 census living in Deering is the following:

Erastus H. Bartlett 66, wife Sarah G. 63, sister Doratha(sp) 74 and Frank R. Bryant 14.

Looks like a pattern here that he took young men as farm hands.

1880 Census living in Charlestown, Suffolk Co., MA

Joseph Bartlett 38, b. NH???
Sarah E. 26
Harvie H. 1. (was born 1879 according to MA birth index)
---------------------------------------
In 1900 census Sarah is a widow, so he died before 1900 census. DId they marry in 1878 ? Is Joseph Bartlett the one that died in 1896 or 1897? Which means he was about 45 years old when he died. Do you have his obit?

We have listmembers who belong to NEHGS who can look up the marriage/death record but if you already have them then there is no reason to.

Someone named Barbara has this family on Ancestry and it lists your Joseph as Josiah Gerevois b. Port Antiqua - do you know this person?

Let us know what you already have and then maybe we can fill in the squares.
