Original meaning was "little black man", but in this case could become a
surname. Portuguese vernacular word would be "negrinho" or "negreto",
corresponding to Spanish "negrito" and Catallan "negret". I suspect this
catalan
word could be the source of this surname. The word without capitals seems to
imply an "alcunha" instead of an "apelido", but in many cases such word became
inherited as surnames.

Hello All,

Would someone please let me know if they're familiar with the word written
after
Fagundes. I am reading it as "negrete" and don't know what it might mean?

Thank you in advance.
Margaret
