With regard to Witness and using family.  I'm not sure if the norm in those
days was just family but I do know from my own family records that their
witnesses were family, extended family, friends and people of power...i.e.
bosses, landlords, proprietors...etc.

Some weddings witnesses can even be someone that was present in the church
at the time of the wedding.
