Thanks Judi,

I have that info. The problem is that I think that he was from Sao Rogue
but she always said that she was from the "cidade" which is Ponta Delgada and
where there is a church Sao Pedro. If, in fact, she was illigitimate that
church would not have kept her baptism record (so I am told). It would have
been recorded in a special book kept at the Matriz church in Ponta Delgada, Sao
Sebastao. Perhaps that book has been sent to the library or archives. I'll
start at the biblioteca and the archives trying to find Humberto and my
grandfather's family. I have his siblings names and year of birth.  I also have
the names of her "foster" brother and sister.

I'm meeting George Pacheco at the FHC in Dartmouth on the 28th to try to make
sense of this conundrum.

Another hard lesson to be learned. Please ask your family for as much
information as they are able to provide. I didn"t. I wasn't interested as a
child and now there is no one to ask. My father and his siblings died at a
reatively young age.

 Thanks again                Joanne

Joanne,
There is an entry on the passports in Ponta Delgada on Feb 13, 1904 for a Jose
Pereira son of Joaquim Pereira and Emilia Augusta traveling with his wife
Francisca de Jesus age 25 and Humberto age 1.  If this is your family, they are
from Sao Rogue, Ponta Delgada.  Have you tried the microfilm at the FHC?  It
should be easy enough to find since you know the birth date.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] grandmother with pais incognito

Hi group,
I hope someone can help me in my quest. On my  grandmother's Francisca J
(Almeida) Pereira born July 1 1879 passport application her parents were listed
as pais inognito. It is thought that the Almeida name was that of her foster or
adoptive parents.
Does anyone know where you begin to look for a birth or baptismal record?
I will be in Sao Miguel for ten days. Leaving on August 14. Will be going to
the archives to trace my grandfather's family (Pereira) but she is the one that
I am really interested in. I know that the Almeida family was from Sao Pedro,
Ponta Delgada. One of the wonderful people in this group found her "sister's"
obituary in Oakland,CA. My grandparents came to the East coast and settled in
Fall River,MA.
She arrived with my grandfather and an 18 month old son named Umberto.
George Pacheco mentioned that the baptisms of those children were kept in
the Matriz church. Any idea as tto how I can see that book?
    Am I on a fruitless
quest?                                                      Joanne Souza
