Joanne, I've found baptisms for children with "pai incógnito" among legitimate birth baptisms in 19th-century registos kept in parishes on Flores and São Jorge, so I wonder if the same was true for São Miguel. In fact, I'd estimate that roughly 1 in 6 to 8 baptisms in those parishes for was a child without an acknowledged father -- though of course it's entirely likely that both parents and their families knew perfectly well who the dad was :-)
