Hi all, Some of you may be familiar with the volunteers at the PGHS. Mr. Nelson has been fantastic in helping me and left me this little gem of a mystery:
"I checked the passport registration and the consul's "passenger manifest".... the pasport registration for Sao Miguel...listed Francisco Jose d' Sousa (25 yrs old), father deceased, mother Miguelina Rosa da Cunha from R. de Piexe, wife Joana Erminia da Costa Maiato (20 yrs old) and niece (?) Eva (12 yrs old). this is for the ship Monarch....they are not listed on the consul's record for the Monarch. Freitas (page 119) listed Mairanno Jose de Souza, born Rabo de Peixe...son of Francisco Jose de Souza and Miquelina Rosa da Cunha. The consul general record: City of Paris Francisco Jose de Sousa (57 yrs old), wife Jacintha Candida (35 yrs old), children Marianno 17, Eva 12, Maria 8, Anna 4, Rosa 15 days." Now all this came from wondering about Gx3 Grandfather Francisco Jose Souza and the confusion between ships manifest and the Freitas Book citing different wives. My Auntie (Gx2 to Francisco) knew of Miquelina de Cunha from when her daughters did a school project. Francisco's son Marianno is in the PHM by Freitas and shows Miquelina as mother; Anna SOUZA Brum is in the PHM by Freitas daughter of Francisco and shows mother as Jacintha Candida Ferriera. So I turn to all you seasoned historians for some ideas. 1) Wrong Francisco? 2) Married twice? 3) Francisco had a son of same name (as noted above) could he be the one on the SS City of Paris passeger list? 4) ??? My gutt says (and has been yelling @ me about this for some time) that the Francsico I chose (the one married to Jacintha) is not right. Marianno named one of his daughters Miquelina (laid to rest as Madiline) although not first born daughter I find this as a flag.
