Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has announced a "Family Finder Bundle" sale. This is for NEW customers (Not for those who have already tested their DNA with FTDNA. For those who would have tested, it would be one of their upgrade sales that you would be looking for).
For those new to DNA, here's what this stuff is: Family Finder: This is their newest product. It tests the 22 pairs of autosomal DNA. It doesn't matter if you are male or female. It looks at tiny segments on the chromosomes. If you and I both have the same thing on chromosome 3 (for example) for 5 cM (I forget what that stands for - it's a measurement) and we have another match on chromosome 14 of 8 cM and they run everything through their algorithm and they wind up predicting we are 3rd cousins (I believe they can predict from siblings to 5th cousins). I'm making all that up with my example, but it works along those lines. So if we had some matching segments, then we could pull out our paper trail research and try to pin point our common ancestor. With this test, you don't have to stick to a strict male line or strict female line. If your "pai incognito" is your mother's father's father's mother's father, then this test is what you need. Y-DNA 12: This is for men only. It tests your Y chromosome which is your strict paternal line - your father's father's father's father - that line, all men, all the way back. The 12 is that they test only 12 locations on the Y chromosome. You get more anthropological type information with 12 markers. It's more of an introductory or very basic type DNA test. mtDNA: This is for either men or women. It tests your mother's mother's mother's mother's line - that line, all women, all the way back. The basic mtDNA test is also for anthropological type information. It's a basic test. Oh! mtDNA stands for mitochondrial DNA. Here's their sale announcement: Family Finder + Y-DNA 12.
