I need to know Agostinho (Augustine) Silveira's (my great great grandfather's)
birthdate and parents to find my Portuguese roots. I think he was born between
1790-1810 on the Island of Faial.

Where could I go to find Roman Catholic Church Records when I don't know
Agostinho's (a Catholic Priest) birthdate or his parents' names. He died 1874
overseas. He named his first child, Immanuel and later when he knew he was
dying gifted land for a convent overseas.

I can only think of 2 ways:
1. Applying to get access to his "de generes" form filled in as a prospective
priest detailing 2 family generations.
But to what address would I apply? Which place stores these records?
Does anyone have baptism/christening, marriage or death records on Faial
that are signed by Agostinho Silveira possibly mid 1920s
to mid 1940s. This would help to establish dates for Agostinho's time on
the Island of Faial.

2. Applying to Archives in Horta, Faial, Azores for a birthdate.
Biblioteca Publica E Arquivo da Horta,
    9900 Horta
    Faial, Azores
This is difficult because I understand they don't do searches but only
supply certificates for given dates & specific occasions.
Also, if one contacted this Archive Centre, would you have to write in
Portuguese - I haven't had any contact with the Portugues language.

I really feel I have reached a great brick wall. Is there someone please who
can give me some advice? I would be ever so grateful.

Many thanks,
Joy
