I stayed several times at the Principe Real Hotel in Lisbon
www.hotelprincipereal.com

It's a boutique hotel and very nice.

Try the Trivoli Lisboa. Very nice and centrally located with access to train
station, etc. And make sure you go to Senor Vinho's for Fado and dinner.

As far as the area to stay in, it is better to stay in the Chiado, then in
Rocio and the Biaxa which can be unsafe at night for tourist. The Alfama is
always a nice place to stay and only stay in the barrio alta if you are young
and want to party... not a place for peace and quiet.
Also you might want to look into renting a vacation apartment. Sometimes you
can get a great deal on them.

I second that. I stayed there five years ago. It was a convenient walk to
shopping and restaurants and the trolly stop was right outside. I also don't
know about how it compares to others as far as rates go.

There was a nice view from the rooftop at night.
