Jenn, My mother's family tree is extensively based from Europe (England, German, Ireland). I also have royalty throughout several generations in England, who also married those in French, Spanish and Italian royal lines. Because they were royalty, excellent records were kept. There is extensive documentation posted online of these royal lineages from multiple sources, manly books. Do a Google search and you'll discover a wealth of information. I've listed the books as my reference sources. I am an ancestor to Johan Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) on my mother's side. In researching him, I discovered that he worked for a Duke of Weimar, a region in what we now call modern day Germany. Many of these regions lightly joined together in 1806. But, it wasn't until 1871 that Germany officially became a nation. So, there is discrepancies within www.ancestry.com in how people list German ancestors. Some literally don't list the country "Germany" until after 1871 and just the region. Many list Germany as the country on pre-1871 listings, not understanding that Germany wasn't officially a country.
