I live in Hayward, California, the town that is called the center of the Bay (San Francisco Bay, that is). It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay, halfway between San Francisco and San Jose and across the bridge from San Mateo. Between San Francisco and Hayward is Oakland. All of these places are known for having Portuguese families. San Leandro is between Oakland and Hayward and was even mentioned by Jack London in one of his books. He said something about passing through the farma and orchards of San Leandro, talking with the people and getting the feeling that if one of the Portuguese immigrants was to take a liking to your land, you had little chance he would not work as hard as it took to own the land.
