Hi Cheri,
It seems the Madeira/Porto Santo branches are using it as a surname, it shows 
up in both male and female as da Paixão.

OK, got it.  I don't know why I was thinking it was a surname.  Learned 
something new.

Denise,  I think there's a Madeira branch somewhere in my tree, but it's not 
this one.  Or at least, not yet.
