Carol,

There are no ship manifests but there are Passport Applications if your grandpa
was ever Naturalized. If he was Naturalized and traveled abroad he could
(didn't have to until after WWI) but there may be an application. Go to Family
Search---US--Immigration & Emmigration and look for Passport Applications.
These are for Citizens (natural or naturalized) only, not someone who was still
a citizen of their native country.

  Cheri--
You must be psychic! Thank you so much for that piece of information. Last
evening I was wondering if it was possible to find exit visa-type documents or
a passport filing for my Madruga grandfather for the period of November &
December 1902. That basically tells me that the documentation on that would be
next to impossible to find. Thank you so much for all you do and mentoring all
the discussions and questions all of us raise!

OK, in trying to find which book that has the info on the ship stopped in
one port but your ancestor was counted in the other port, I found this instead:

John P. Colletta's "They Came In Ships." Mine is the 3rd edition (2002).
So the page number may be off.

Chapter 5: Other Resources and Information of Potential Value
Sub heading: U.S. Departure Records (pg. 117)
"Records of passengers departing U.S. ports are close to nonexistent."

So chances of finding your ancestor sailing back for a visit or stay in the
Azores is very, very, very slim. Read the whole section for a full
explanation. You can find the book in your local public library. The
bookstore may have it too. It's only 1 page long.
