Carol,

Passports were not a requirement until after WWI BUT they could be requested if
a person wanted one. My uncle just used his Naturalization Papers as his
passport! I have the actual document and it has stamps all over it with dates
of the different times he left the USA and returned to the Azores! I think the
main reason a man would get a passport to go back to the "old country" would be
so that he did not get conscripted into the military while he was back there. I
have a document that my Uncle Antonio Neves had upon his return to the Azores
in about 1920 or so giving him a kind of dispensation for a 6 month period
while he visited the Azores stating that he could not be made to join the
military. He received it from the Portuguese Consolate in San Fran.

  Rosemarie--
My grandfather became a naturalized citizen on October 7, 1898 in Martinez
CA. I was under the impression that passports were not required before WWI,
that is why I thought he might not need one. Thanks for the info being
available at Family Search. I never even thought of that, but it makes sense.

  Thank you.

Another excellent thing about passport applications is many include a
picture. I have found pictures for several ancestors on their passport
applications. A blessing to have for my genealogy files. It is amazing to
look at one of them from taken in about 1920...I look exactly like that
ancestor!

The only thing with the American passport application....when the person
applied, they assume you will be taking a trip.

I'm looking at an American passport application from 1964. Different time
periods will ask for different information. This one asks for approximate date
of departure, port of departure, ship or airline, previous trips, business or
pleasure, length of stay, countries visited, length of stay, and if you are
planning any others.

The renewal application was only 3 years later (and cost only $5 in 1967!)
It asks if it's an organized tour, port of departure, ship or airline,
approximate departure date, number of previous visits in the last 12 months,
purpose of trip, length of stay, countries visited, and if you are planning any
others.

But that doesn't mean that my ancestor in 1964 and 1967 took a trip
(although I know she did have one because I have a few photos with dates). I
don't have her actual passport booklet either.

I wonder what a current passport application says? My dad applied for his
first one ever in his life about 3 years ago. He was thinking of going up to
Canada. But he still hasn't planned that trip yet. Hmm, I wonder what he
wrote on his application?
