Theme: Integration of Portuguese Immigrants and Their Descendants in
the United States and Canada

The Institute for Portuguese and Lusophone World Studies is pleased to
announce a two-day conference on topics related to Portuguese
immigration and integration into American and Canadian societies.

Questions to be addressed include, but are not limited to:

-How have the Portuguese populations of the United States and Canada
integrated/assimilated into their respective adopted nations through
the generations?

-What changes in education, occupation, political participation and
use of the Portuguese language have taken place?

-What marks have the Portuguese and their descendants made on their
respective communities and how do they maintain their cultural and
ethnic boundaries?

-To what extent do Luso-descendants remain identified and connected to
their ethnic culture, ethnic communities and Portugal?

This two-day conference will bring together a cadre of national and
international scholars to address these questions and more.

The conference organizers are seeking proposals for conference
presentations in the area of ethnic and migration studies,

Americans and Portuguese-Canadians and their descendants into their
respective host societies.

Presentations comparing the integration of other ethnic groups, in
particular those of other Lusophone populations, with the Portuguese-
American and Portuguese-Canadian experiences are also welcomed.
