GEDCOM 5.5, the "latest," was released 15 years ago, in January, 1996.

When I need to add something (such as a dispensation, or perhaps a
godparent), I have to go into the inner workings and code Gedcom to "EVEN"
for Event. Then I have to remember to tell the recipient what I've done.

Dick Eastman has written about it in the past: http://goo.gl/CvLKm

Many genealogy software programs can read directly from a few other programs
without Gedcom. It is always best to bring someone else's Gedcom into a
separate file in your genealogy program. After you see what's there (and
figure out the godparent wasn't really event), you can fix up the info in
your genealogy program and then merge the two together.
