My husband and I just found out some interesting tips about GEDCOM files. The following URL will tell you all the GEDCOM field names supported by GEDCOM 5.5, the latest version of GEDCOM.
http://homepages.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pmcbride/gedcom/55gcappa.htm If you add events of your own, like Godmother, Godfather, etc. which is not supported by GEDCOM you will not get your additions if you use GEDCOM to change from one program to another. You will only get the GEDCOM 5.5 field names they support. I am supposing this might be some of the problems people have experienced when they lost data as they upgraded their software.
