Years ago, they used to have one or 2 film readers at the FHC in Hayward, on
Hayward Blvd. across from Highland School.  Shortly after I found the place,
they moved it (as Helen stated) to Decoto Rd.  When I visited there a couple of
times, I med Helen.  Their hours were limited and they depended heavily on
volunteers.  I got the feelilng they did not have a lot of people interested in
Portuguese research.

Since Oakland was not that far from me, I would go there when I needed to look
at film.  I had an interesting experience when I was trying to find information
about my son-in-law's Azorean ancestors.  I was looking in information in the
USA, trying to figure out the island from which the ancestors had immigrated.

The staff in Oakland kept telling me to contact a man who lived in Livermore
because he knew "everything" about the Azores.  No one would understand that I
knew how things worked as far as records go in the Azores and I needed
information about finding someone who had immigrated before 1900 (he died in
1906 in San Leandro, CA) and he had 10 children.  It was not until I learned
there was a Federal Archive in San Bruno that had film of the census.  (This
was all before census was indexed and readily available).

I did know the township in which he had lived; I looked through all the
listings for someone whose name began with S and had a whole lot of children
listed.  I found a Sakata.  That was what Sequeira sounded like to the census
recorder!  All the children listed matched the names I had so I accepted that
was the correct Frank.  Of course, Azores, was the place of birth listed.

Cheri...
Green Valley Rd  for the Fremont FHC is not the correct address.
I wrote to Helen Salvador, who lives in Fremont, and asked her about the FHC in
Fremont.
With her permission here follows her e-mail to me.
"
"I haven't been there in two years.  As far as the machines when I went 2 years
ago, they had two or three a  large readers, but they didn't enlarge very much
and was really hade to read the Azores film.  They also had two smaller
readers.  I liked them better because you could enlarge the film more.  I think
they had 3 or 4 computers.  I never used the computers.  They also had a
printer.  You could only use the printer to print.  It really enlarged the
film.  They said the bulb for the printer was to expensive to be used as a
reader.

I don't know where Green Valley Road is.  Never heard of it in Fremont. but
than again I don't know all the roads. :)  Sounds more like Castroi Valley.
Fremont's FHC is on Decoto Road.  Down 880 to Decoto Rd turnoff (east) .  Can't
miss it  on your left.  Not sure of the days their open.  It always depends on
when the volunteers can work.  I know their opened on Sat. Mornings.

Mike Cordeniz and I have mostly gotten   the Azores film.  I have order film
for Terceira, Flores, Graciosa, Santa Maria    "

Also from Helen...
"  I was reading, I think your e-mail to the list saying they didn't have
Fremont listed, and then I vaguely  remember they called that the "Hayward
stake" and I remember someone ordering film and they told her to put Hayward,
even though its not in Hayward.  "
