You know, Celeste, that all of us are nodding our heads. Someone not addicted
to
Genealogy would never understand going through all the S census to find a
family! I spent one whole day going through 20 years of school records doing
the
same thing:-)

Now, if only one of you could tell me about my husband's grandfather that
supposed jumped ship in SF. I cannot find any information about this man before
he married Mary Granvanco and started having kids. He went by Manuel Mattos
(Mattis) but told grandkids he had taken his mother's name. I know he was from
the Azores, but don't know which island. Keep me in mind as you research!

Subject: Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] The address of Fremont FHC

Years ago, they used to have one or 2 film readers at the FHC in Hayward, on
Hayward Blvd. across from Highland School. Shortly after I found the place,
they moved it (as Helen stated) to Decoto Rd. When I visited there a couple of
times, I med Helen. Their hours were limited and they depended heavily on
volunteers. I got the feelilng they did not have a lot of people interested in
Portuguese research.

Since Oakland was not that far from me, I would go there when I needed to look
at film. I had an interesting experience when I was trying to find information
about my son-in-law's Azorean ancestors. I was looking in information in the
USA, trying to figure out the island from which the ancestors had immigrated.

The staff in Oakland kept telling me to contact a man who lived in Livermore
because he knew "everything" about the Azores. No one would understand that I
knew how things worked as far as records go in the Azores and I needed
information about finding someone who had immigrated before 1900 (he died in
1906 in San Leandro, CA) and he had 10 children. It was not until I learned
there was a Federal Archive in San Bruno that had film of the census. (This
was
all before census was indexed and readily available).

I did know the township in which he had lived; I looked through all the
listings
for someone whose name began with S and had a whole lot of children listed. I
found a Sakata. That was what Sequeira sounded like to the census recorder!
All the children listed matched the names I had so I accepted that was the
correct Frank. Of course, Azores, was the place of birth listed.
