Sam, Poke around in Dick Eastman's archives. He wrote about identity theft. www.eogn.com It's much, much easier for thieves to get it from your trash or other places.
The only time I came close was when the kid at the hardware store stole my credit card number. I bought a bunch of stuff, including the little night light type bulbs. One was the wrong wattage. So I went to get the correct one and the kid said he could only do exchanges at another register. The difference was 7 cents! But he insisted. He didn't turn in the receipt to the store. He kept it (this was back in the day when your full credit card number printed out on receipts). The next day, my credit card company called me. I was in a restaurant in FL, a Home Depot in MI, and bought 2 plane tickets (complete with names) in CO. My credit card company stopped the card and I wasn't responsible for the charges. I went back to Lowes and reported the employee, but he had already quit by then. The manager was quite upset.
