Suzanne, I don't research Sao Jorge and I'd have to look at a map. The nearest port to Sao Jorge is either Horta on Faial island or Angra on the island of Terceira. If the emigrant was going to HI, they had to leave out of Ponta Delgada on Sao Miguel, no matter which island they were originally from. If an emigrant needed to get there by a certain time, they could have gone on the next boat, so that could be any of the 3 ports. It seems like the vast majority left from their home port though.
