Dear Group--

In about an hour I will be leaving to attend graveside services for my
mother's 85 year-old cousin who just died of Alzheimer's Disease. While
talking to my oldest sister I got to thinking about when I interviewed this
cousin on family history--back when he was relatively cognizant of what was
going on around him. Most of what he and his wife told me that day I
already new--but he shared a few new gems that I otherwise would never have
known Like how the house my grandparents moved into in Gloucester in 1912,
the previous owner was my grandfather's uncle. Same story when they moved
here to San Diego in 1927. Because the names were so different I never
would have made the connection.Especially since this uncle's name was Frank
Mitchell. Now how un-Portuguese can you get.

Also, from interviewing other "older" family members while they still can
remember things, and with technology today, you can record, take pictures on
your cell phone and do so many other things, you can keep those memories
from being totally lost. In addition you save time from having to re-invent
the wheel, having to dig up all this information on your own, and attempt
the hard way to put it all together--like I have had to do. Unfortunately,
in my case, I waited too long to get started and most of the people who
could have been a considerable help had already died.

But I do want to say, thank heaves for groups like Ancestry.com, and this
group! Even though I don't contribute much, I do appreciate reading a lot
of the emails because sometimes they give me a good idea or clue on where to
search for a piece of information I am missing. I get some real AHA
moments!
