Unfortunately these situations can be nightmarishly tricky. Take my grandmother, for instance. On her birth record, she is simply Maria. Later on, in her marriage record and the births of her children, she is Maria da Estrela, Maria Leonor, Maria Cândida and Maria Cândida de Jesus. Fortunately, my grandfather's name never varied. By the way, all of grandmother's names had a ryme and a reason. Leonor was her mother's name. Both she and her mother were born on February 2nd, festa de Nossa Senhora da Estrela in Bretanha, and festa de Nossa Senhora, Cândida de Jesus, in her mother's village. Febuary 2nd is the feast of Candlemas. If you were researching in Bretanha and your ancestors were Manuel Faria and Maria de Jesus, you'd be spending a great deal of time parsing out the kids among several couples with exactly the same name. That is why adding the names of grandparents in the mid-19th century was a tremendous help. Good luck!

Hi everyone, Marcia (on this group list) and I have been working hard to try and confirm if an ancestor of ours could be one in the same even though on two different records, his birth year is different and the mothers name is slightly different. Could this be possible? Francisco da Costa, son of Andre da Costa and his wife Maria Margarida, born 30 June 1797 bapt 7 July 1797 in Sao Pedro, Villa Franca do Campo, Sao Miguel Island. and then a Sao Pedro marriage record we found 22 August 1819, has a side note that says Francisco da Costa 26 years old ( The 1797 birth record would make him 22 years old ) son of Andre da Costa and Maria dos Santos marries Claudina Maria 20 years old, daughter of Franciso de Souza and Antonia Joze. The difference in the mothers name could be acceptable but what about the difference in the birth years? Insight anyone? -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected].
