Hello Tony,

As far as what his name could be I would say Francisco Jose. I have seen a
number of Jose in Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel.

Hello Cheri, My great grandfather is reputed to have come from the Azores as
a sailor/whaler and apparently jumped ship here in NZ. Unfortunately, not a
lot is known about him. We think he anglicised his name to Francis Joseph.
My query to you is this, can you give me any clues as to what it may have
been before the change? We have no idea which island he may have come from.
>From his marriage certificate I see he was 57 years old when he married a
very much younger woman here in New Zealand. They had only one child. The
marriage certificate just says he was born in Portugal. I worked out he was
he was born in 1822. Perhaps some one in the group may know something
anyway here's hoping on this very "long shot". Thanks, Tony
