Yes, more likely to be whaling than trading. Whaling migration patterns well match many of those places. That Mariners website is brilliant, and you should pick him up. Try many different spellings though. My man appears on the "Robert Towns" as George Deers and then someone has added Manuel Dias.

Once you find him on a particular ship, it could be interesting to see what you can find out on the ship in subsequent trips (even if his one isn't detailed). "google" is your friend. Many of the major Australasian web~site indexes and information are googlable!!!

According to his obit, re my great-grandfather Manuel Noronha (b. 1843
on São Jorge)... [From Massachusetts] "in 1869 he shipped shortly
after for San Francisco and arrived there [again???] in 1872 after
having been in Australia, New Zealand, and around Cape Horn twice,
South Sea Islands, Hawaiian Islands and Guam."

Nowhere in his obit is whaling mentioned, but I wonder: Does this
correspond to typical whaling itineraries? According to family lore
he also sailed up to Alaska, including through the Bering Strait.
Would appreciate any clues that members can provide re the 1860s-70s
whaling life (I know that he'd settled in California before the 1880
US Census).

Katharine.
