My advice would be to continue to work backwards from 1907, as Ernesto
may have traveled to the US, or, other places, prior to the year he
immigrated. I encountered a similar circumstance while researching my
grandfather's adventures. No one ever told me that he'd traveled to
the US on three separate occasions - visiting both coasts, prior to
1924, when he immigrated with his wife and 5 of his six children.

The whole reason most Azoreans were considering migration to the US,
Canada, and, other places, during that era, was, primarily because of
the promise of work, and, a better life - as opposed to the conditions
of lack of work, dire poverty, and disease, they were facing in the
islands. Often the head of the family would come first, to scout out
the options for work, housing, and, relatives, or friends, that could
stake them until they were settled in.
