Repost for Katharine Baker: Speaking of people named Foster...
1. Does anyone else remember the small "Foster's Freeze" chain of fast-food and ice cream stands in Oakland? My dad used to take me to one between Telegraph Avenue and Bushrod Playground (near 60th Street, possibly on Racine Street -- the memory sometimes fades, LOL!) in North Oakland. It was the first place I ever saw soft-serve ice cream while growing up, let alone what seemed like utter magic when the server would, for an extra nickel, dip the cone into a vat to form a thin shell of chocolate over the ice cream!!! Even though my family hid the Portugueseness (Azoreanness, specifically) on my father's side, it seems not implausible that the Foster of "Foster Freeze" fame may well have been their fellow Portuguese-American, perhaps someone they'd known for decades in Oakland. 2. Does anyone else remember KSFO-AM's sports announcer in the 1950s-60s, Bud Foster, who did play-by-play of Cal football and basketball games? Does anyone know if he was one of us too? :-))) Katharine -- To unsubscribe from this group, send email to [email protected]. Follow the confirmation directions when they arrive.
