I well understand the frustration of not finding an ancestor's arrival in the U.S. I know my grandfather Jõao Silveira Leal sailed from Faial in 1905, went through Ellis Island in New York, and then took the train to Oakland, where his older brother, António Silveira Leal of what is now Fremont, awaited him. António had left Faial just before my grandfather was born and sent the passage when my grandfather was 16. I also know that Francisco Duarte, a buddy of my grandfather came with him on the same ship and train, on passage paid by his brother in San Leandro.

While I have found the passenger list of that ship and Francisco Duarte's name on it (along with his brother in San Leandro as the final destination), I cannot find my grandfather's name anywhere. What I know about my grandfather's journey is based on the story he consistently told over the years, a story confirmed by the Duarte family.
