In the case of my grandfather, Antonio Xavier Madruga, who came to the
United States in March 1892, he came from Pico via Faial to Ellis Island,
arriving March 20, 1892.
He then went by train to the area around what is now Antioch CA where he
worked on his Uncle Manuel Vieira's farm. Manuel and his brother Francisco
immigrated in
1880 to Castle Garden NY. According to one of Francisco''s
great-granddaughters, Manuel and Francisco walked from New York to the area
around what is now Antioch CA.
In 1903 my grandfather returned to Pico. In March of 1906 he returned to
the United States with his wife and first two children. They then settled
in Gloucester MA.
They moved back to California (Hayward) around 1926-27; a year later they
moved to San Diego with 7 of their 10 children. The oldest daughter was
married and living in Oakland;
the second oldest daughter was living in Beverly MA; the oldest son was
attending MIT.

My guess is that most Portuguese that came to California probably did not
come around Cape Horn. However, it would make sense for those who went to
Hawaii and then to California.
