Hi Vivian, A lot of people start visiting the Azores from May all the way through summer. More festas going on and great weather. So May is fine. Maybe some rain and carry a jacket too.
There are flights from Lisbon to the Azores, so that is not a problem. If the agent who is getting you to Lisbon can't get you to the Azores, you'll want to check TAP or SATA directly for their rates and do it yourself. Both sites have an English button.
