If you go during "high season" (June-August), it's true that you'll get to see lots of festas, etc. But you'll also pay the highest rates for everything from airfare to hotels.
If you plan to go to any of the archives (in the public libraries in Ponta Delgada, Angrado Heroísmo or Horta), you'll encounter lots of other tourists hoping to do genealogical research as well, so you won't get as much help, since the staff will be spread thin. In August, a good many Azoreans (like other Europeans) are likely to be away on vacation, too. Plus, while the mid-summer temperatures in the Azores sound mild, they're typically accompanied by suffocating humidity, and not everywhere has air-conditioning. My favorite times to visit the Azores are May and October, as the temperatures are a bit lower, prices are generally a bit lower, there are very few other tourists, and you'll have the archives practically to yourself for whatever research you hope to conduct.
