My favorite time to go to the S. Miguel is in the very late summer thru mid November. After that it begins to rain quite a bit and the winter months are absolutely miserable due to pea-soup thick fog, sometimes for days on end, rain, and dampness. Many of the older homes still have no heat to take the chill and dampness out of the air. Everybody should see the Santo Cristo festival once. However, once is quite enough for me. Ponta Delgada, a town of 25,000 swells to 100,000 for the festa.Getting in and out of Ponta Delgada on that weekend can be challenging if you are driving a car (using taxis and the bus during the festas is preferred, but finding a cab that has not been reserved can also be a challenge). The best thing to do is to stay in Ponta Delgada for the festa. I have little tolerance for humidity, so although I like the lazy, hazzy days of an Azorean summer, the humidity can be even more oppressive than it sometimes is in July in New England, though never as hot. I love spending time on S. Miguel, so given the chance, I would go at anytime, but if I were to go in winter, I would stay in a climate controled hotel rather than in the village or in the homes of friends in the city. John

I've gone to Ponta Delgada on 4 different trips in either July or August. I've never seen it overrun with tourists. Actually, out of my 4 trips there, I've only seen 1 other tourist once and they came only 1 day. It was me the other days. I did take a trip with Shirley Allegre. Shirley will correct me, but besides some students, I believe we were the only Americans there. Also, the only time I had a problem with humidity was when I was on Terceira. I was there for 2 weeks in July I believe. I didn't have a problem with humidity on Sao Miguel on any of my 4 trips there. I think that the islands probably differ a bit in their micro climates.
