Sonia,

As far as the US in concerned, I believe a lot of it came when they arrived in the US and wanted to assimilate with the American culture. I have done much research in Lisbon at the Archives quite a few years ago but now those records, as well as other areas of mainland Portugal, are slowly coming online which it makes it a little easier for all of us. I do know my Austrian Empire family who went to the Algarve with Napoleon and married there changed the original spelling when the children came of age and they changed it to a more Portuguese spelling. Interestingly, the ones who went to Trieste, Italy after WWII changed it to a more Italian spelling. Since the land went back and forth between Italy and Croatia, there maybe some who remained in Croatia who consider themselves Croatia but the ones who went to Italy consider themselves Italian...although I believe most of them are loyal to their Italian heritage no matter where they live.
