Sonia,

In my family that arrived in R. I. before 1900 the name change was
first evident in the 1900 U. S. Census. My mother's grandparents were
- maternal - Pedro da Silva or Silveira, and, paternal, Luis or Luiz
das Neves. Up to 1900 they continued to use those names. In the 1900
U. S. Census, the Pedros became "Peters", and the Luis da Neves became
"Lewis". That change was also reflected in the given names as well
as the surnames. The birth records of Lewis's born up to 1899 used
the Luis das Neves name and Portuguese given names (Jose, Antonio and
Margarida); my mother who was born in 1903, the first born after 1900,
was given an Anglo given name and the new surname, Leonora Lewis. My
grandmother, Maria (b. 1976) and her sister, Rosa, (b. 1877) used the
Portuguese, Pedro da Silva. The first time the name Peters was used
was in the 1900 Census when they were all listed with the name Peters
and their given names were all Anglicised (Mary, Rose, Joseph, Frank
and Anna).

Regards,
Jack
