"CSU, Stanislaus, to host exhibit on whaling, Azoreans"
Bee Staff Reports

California State University, Stanislaus, will host a traveling exhibit
on whaling and Azorean immigration to America through March 1 on the
second floor foyer of the Vasché Library.

Yankee whalers from New England made the Azores a port of call where
they would load supplies and add crew members. This contact taught
Azoreans how to hunt for whales and led to Azoreans choosing New
England and later California as a place in which to emigrate.

The Center for Portuguese Studies will host the exhibit from the New
Bedford Whaling Museum. The exhibit will be open for viewing from 9
a.m. to 9 p.m.

For more information, contact Elmano Costa, directorof the Center for
Portuguese Studies, at (209) 667-3638 or visit
