Thank you all for your thoughts.  All were useful.  None of the family
members speak Portuguese very well, but they are confident and up for an
adventure, so they might go and try to find an English-speaking individual
in the registry. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

 

I forgot that the archives are for much older records!  Duh!  She died in
Ponta Garca, and they plan to go there.  This changes my perspective, so
I'll have to rethink this. Thanks again.

Hi Eileen,

I would say it depends how is your family members are well versed in
genealogy and if they speak Portuguese.

A 1941 death will be at the civil registry at the respective concelho.  Did
this ancestor die in Ponta Delgada or somewhere in the council of Ponta
Delgada?

If so, they I think they would fill out a request, pay, and have the record
mailed to you.
