I am a bit skeptical of the quality of indexing done by organizations. Whether they are paid or volunteers getting just a single letter wrong will render it useless to a searcher. Just think of some of the US Census indexes. My general impression is that with Family search you search a name and all you get is that result. I prefer to search an entire book page by page for what I am looking for. Granted sometimes you get lucky and find what you look for but in most cases I have not had much luck with this method.

I don't recall the exact words, but something along the lines of personal use only. In order for them to film, they have a contact with the government. I think the contract says something about personal use only, so we can't create a group effort index. In the past (and before they started cracking down on the rule), people have created an index for their personal use. That's how some people on this list seem to have some magical knowledge and just come up with things quickly. Family Search will be indexing all their film eventually, as it gets digitized. I don't know if this is a 10 year or a 20 year project. I am going to be meeting with someone when I go to Salt Lake next month, so I can ask that question about indexing.
