Rick, I had a similar thought; what I am wondering is, does the contract
give the FHC Group control over the usage of THEIR films, or rather,
over the information itself? If it is the latter, then I agree, but I
will certainly wait until there is clarification to say anything that
could implicate the group in any way as facilitating any wrong-doing.
I definitely agree that with these Azorean records, I would not put much
faith into an index compiled by a group/person who, for all i know, does
not have knowledge of the subject. I would prefer an index created by
Azorean researchers, just as I would prefer an index to the Irish
records I need created by genealogists who know about Irish genealogy
rather than for the Irish index to be compiled by Azorean researchers.
The problem of one culture's genealogical information being forced into
another culture's format to be recorded is one we all have probably seen
in looking up our people who have come to America; just this morning I
found an American record for a baby who's mother's maiden name was
"Jesus." Understandable for the 1920's, but I really hope that this
problem will not be an issue today.
For what it's worth, going through the records is not torture, and I
certainly have gained some foundational knowledge of extremely basic
Portuguese from doing it. And in the end, it ultimately exposes me to
more information which is more than likely linked to my own tree in some
way. I absolutely don't consider the currently available resources
useless, but I'm sure that a lot of us no longer have very much to gain
from combing through the books endlessly.
Thanks as always for the replies, they are enlightening.

Hi Jesse,
Film that comes from FamilySearch/LDS/Mormons/FHC has a stamp on it
now. I don't recall the exact words, but something along the lines of
personal use only. In order for them to film, they have a contact
with the government. I think the contract says something about
personal use only, so we can't create a group effort index.
In the past (and before they started cracking down on the rule),
people have created an index for their personal use. That's how some
people on this list seem to have some magical knowledge and just come
up with things quickly.
Family Search will be indexing all their film eventually, as it gets
digitized. I don't know if this is a 10 year or a 20 year project. I
am going to be meeting with someone when I go to Salt Lake next month,
so I can ask that question about indexing.
