Lisa,

If they went to Hawaii sometimes it is alittle easier because the passport
records out of San Miguel and the Hawaii digital records. The Portuguese
Hawaiian group in Hawaii is great.
Barring that the passport records if you can find them state the information.
On one of my grandmother's brothers he put it on the draft notice.
The easiest is the obituaries if you are lucky enough to find them and they put
some detail. Sometimes even the parish is listed as well. The LDS family
centers have free newspaper access to some.

Good luck. This site has been a great help. Look through the archives. I
have Vierra Anselmo or Viera Anselmo form Ribeira Secca,Ribeira Grande, San
Miguel and Pereira Dutra from Silviera, Pico.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: How to determine freguesia

There are two places that I have had key success in pin-pointing the village,
that someone is from.
This is after every US document I have ever found-only states Azores or San
Miguel.....which is useless in genealogy.
1. The church marriage record here in the states-from the church ledger book.
(not the county certificate document)
The priest is suppose to record "in the ledger book" where (town-church)
the groom or bride was originally baptized at.
Technically the priest should have sent a letter to that baptism church-to
confirm the facts. Didn't always happen.
2. The "original" mortuary information sheet, filled out while making
arrangements......at the funeral home
Most funeral homes have all their old records, or they turn them over to
another similar firm, for safe keeping.
Typically its just a one page info sheet that one of the family members
filled out.

I would appreciate any tips about determining what freguesia a family came
from. Seem to be running into apparent "brick walls" because nearly every
document I have found only lists "Azores Islands". On one side of the family I
have the name of the island and town they lived in before immigrating to the US
but don't know if that is where births or marriages took place; on the other
side all I have is the island. The immigrations I know about took place
between 1850-1905. Thank you for any advice.
