Kate, I've found a possible brother to Jose: Manuel Mariano Grante, born 11 Jan 1800 in Sao Roque, Pico. There is no further information about him, however. But, it gives you another name that could be researched, if you don't already have him. At least with a date, you can look at the microfilm and possibly find parents names.
