Hello Karen:

I have several ways I record such changes in names on my FTM file.

First, and probably the more proper way, is that on my 2005 version of FTM  if
I check the edit box under the name of the individual it will take me to a new
window titled GENERAL within which there is a data element labeled "AKA' (also
known as).  If you enter a name  in this box, it will also be shown in the
index of names when you activate the "INDEX OF INDIVIDUALS" tab at the top of
the family page.   Using this procedure you will always be able to find this
persons file in the name index no matter which name you may be looking for as
they both will show in the index.

Second. I will again use the edit tab and when I get to the GENERAL window at
the top there are tabs to additional windows one labeled NOTES.  I then will
make what ever notes are appropriate.   AT this point be sure to show at the
end of your note the (SOURCE OF YOUR DATA) as the program does not provide a
separate for data element for sources of notes, and you may some time wish you
had a reference to the source of that note.

Thirdly, and most inappropriate, (but I have found very helpful) is to put the
comment "(see notes)" in the PLACE (birth, marriage, death) data
element.  Quite often I may not have any data for one of these boxes so it is
no problem.  If I have data such as CITY and STATE I will place the  (note)
between the two  so that in sorting or working with my data these actions are
not seriously disrupted.  This has not happened very often in my file so I have
not had a problem .

I agree with Richard, I use the name as shown on my  source document.

An interesting case I had was in my wife's family.  one of her documented
grandmother,s  was HUNG AS A WITCH in the Salem, Massachusetts  Witch Trials.
In the actual  trial court records her last name was spelled 22 different
ways.  By using the NOTE procedure above I have recorded these names/changes
just once and the information is there to be noted should one wish to see it.

Hi Karen,

In FTM you can pick and choose people to go into your file. When I want to be
sure I get only the information I want I create a new family file and import
only the people I want. This gives me an opportunity to review it before I make
a GEDCOM to upload. When importing to a new file you have a choice of just the
individual, the individual and his ancestors, or the ancestors and his
descendants. Using the latter two choices will speed up the process of filling
the file.

I would leave his name as he is shown in records and show his father’s name as
it is shown. Most all of us have name changes in our family.

Subject: [AZORES-Genealogy] Uploading Gedcom question

I just got awesome information from Joao Ventura and now have info on my
grandfather back to my gr gr gr grandparents!!! The name my grandfather used to
come over with and used is different than the name he was born with. He is
naturalized as Evaristo Rodrigues Medeiros. That is also on his death
certificate. However Joao did some research. His birth and baptism in Sao
Pedro, Ponta Delgada he is Evaristo Rodrigues ROQUE!!

I want to upload my GEDCOM but I don't want to use my Ancestry.com tree. That
tree has other families tied into it. Lots of people not needed for this tree.
I also have Family Tree Maker. I did not share the info from Ancestry to this
tree. Will it be enough information if I just input the parents, grandparents
and so forth without putting in siblings and more current/living people? I am
curious as to how many people are needed in your tree to be able to tie in with
other people?

Another question I have is do I leave my grandfather in my tree with the name
we knew him as or the one he was born with? All U.S. documents are with the
name we knew. Does it make sense to just switch it at my gr grandfather? His
name is Antonio Rodrigues Roque. His father is Jose Rodrigues Roque. Then it
switches to just Roque Rodrigues.

Thanks for reading and replying!
Karen :)
