Mike, this is just a gut feeling, but given the date and the location, I would reasonably assume they came first to Dartmouth/New Bedford. The influx of Portuguese immigrants to New Bedford and Fall River was amazing at the time period. Most came in through the port of Boston rather than New York, which may help. The California towns at that point were pretty undeveloped and if you were a female, there probably wasn't much there, whereas, gold, and other employment made it more lucrative for males (and the fishing was also a potential).
