Mike, The parents of Francisco Leal were Manuel Leal Rosa and Maria dos Anjos. You'll find their names after Francisco Leal fo. The abbreviation fo. means filho or son.
Anna Maria's parents were Manuel Jose Lima and Maria de Sta. Rosa. You'll find their names after the fa. abbreviation which stands for filha or daughter. By the way, Sta. means Santa. The one thing you really need to get is a list if abbreviations. I would suspect that Kathy probably has one on her website. The records on Pico, at least in my experience with the Candelaria, Sao Mateus and Sao Joao villages, are filled with abbreviations. I suspect that's probably true with the other islands. It can be daunting to learn, but you've got to do it. You'll wear out the group's generosity and patience if you don't. Keep chipping away at the obstacles. You'll eventually start making real progress. Those of us who don't know the language have had to learn. In fact, we're still picking up new words and phrases. It's an ongoing process for all of us.
