Hello,
Since Madeira has been mentioned this morning, I'd like to mention one
connection to my husband's great-grandmother I was reminded of this summer.
Mrs. Philomena (ROSE) MOURA reportedly left Sao Miguel ~1912 according to
1920 census, but I'm told she arrived well before her oldest daughter's
marriage in Cambridge, MA in 1912. A family member from her other
daughter's family said "Phoebe" had arrived while Elsie (oldest daughter)
was still living as a servant for a family on Beacon Hill (Boston). IF
Elsie arrived as a 12-yr-old, b1893, arriving ~1905, then her 7 yrs. in
Boston would have ended right about 1911 or 1912. The in-law relative
said Phoebe found out her daughter was not being treated well, and took her
out of there.
To get back to the 1920 census, it was written on the page that Philomena
was born in Portugal, and then both of her parents were born on Madeira !
That means she came from a ROSE family on Madeira. And, if "Phoebe" was
46 in 1920, she would have been born ~1874. We do not know where
"Phoebe" met Francisco MOURA or where they married. We have .no.
information on "Frank." But their children were reportedly born on Sao
Miguel between 1891 and 1912, so a guess would be that they married around
1890 on Sao Miguel.
"Frank" MOURA was reportedly a whaler, so he could have died at sea. The
1920 census listed "Phoebe" as a widow. But, there is a small possibility
that, when Phoebe and their 5 children all migrated to MA/US between ~1905
and ~1912, that "Frank" migrated to Brooklyn, NY.
Over the years I've been told that the MOURA surname is popular on Santa
Maria. And, I don't know about the ROSE name on Madeira.
Betty (near Lowell, MA, USA)
P.S. My husband believes that his great-grandmother died between 1945
and 1949 in Cambridge or Somerville, MA. I don't remember whether I've
ever looked for her death-record, or requested the information from her
death-record. I'll put that on my genealogy-to-do-list.
