Mike,

If he died in this country, you may be able to find a death certificate through 
the town clerk of the town in which he died.  You are sure he was born on the 
"other side" ,   I am going to guess though the name is probably  Jose Pinheiro 
or Jose Pineiro or something like that since Jose Pinheiro would literally 
translate to Joseph Pine.

Also, have you had any luck with looking at the 1920 census?
