I found a few more records on your Manuel da Costa Ponte and Maria de Medeiros. Their first child was a Manuel, b. Sep. 7 1698.He also went by Manuel da Costa Pedres, as is shows in the birth of his child Antonio, Sep. 15 1704. The godmother of this Antonio was Isabel da Costa, daughter of Manuel da Costa Pedres, deceased. I think Isabel da Costa and your Manuel da Costa Ponte AKA Pedres were siblings. Both children of a Manuel da Costa Pedres. I never heard of the surname Pedres or even as a nick name, which it seems in this case to me. All I know about him is that he was involved in ship building. He lived in Ponta Delgada across the street from the "prison". Two of my grandparents descend from him.
