Thanks for the replies. I thought it looked like Maria or Manuel but 
usually these names are abbreviated to Ma and Mel. Also this couple have a 
daughter Maria born in 1724 and a son Manuel in 1727. This baby is born 
inbetween in 1726 - about 22 months before Manuel..
I guess it could be Maria if the previous Maria died. I'll look up the 
obits -
